US audio firm Sonos has a lot riding on its latest release – Bluetooth headphones that will tackle head-on the products of tech giants Bose, Sony and Apple.

American audio firm Sonos has filled the most conspicuous gap in its product line-up – headphones – and for global chief executive Patrick Spence, it’s a high-stakes release that has been half a decade in the making.

After years of tinkering with various prototypes, technologies, and designs, the result is the Sonos Ace, a set of headphones that Spence says delivers superior sound quality and noise cancellation to its rivals. It could also be described as an attempt at a bounceback for a company that has endured a tough few years after riding a wave of bumper demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Available in black or white, the Sonos Ace boasts a 30-hour battery life, active noise cancellation, and support for Dolby Atmos. It will be released on June 5 and retail for $699.The audio brand has built its name on manufacturing high-quality speakers that use Wi-Fi to wirelessly and easily play songs from your Spotify or Apple Music collection. Its devices are in 50 million homes globally.

“There are trade-offs you have to make,” Spence said about that decision. “The number one thing for consumers is that they want it to work out of the box, rather than having to take it home and set it up on your Sonos app, that’s something we learned with our Roam Bluetooth speaker. The other issue was a huge battery-life drop , we want people to be able to use the headphones for a couple of days.

Spence said customers had been calling for the Sonos app to be more modern and easier to navigate but admitted that the company had missed some bugs in its testing, such as the removal of sleep timers.
