Sonoma State University faces backlash from alumni and students after announcing cuts to athletic programs and academic degrees to address a $24 million budget deficit.
Sonoma State University alumni and students are expressing outrage over the recent announcement that the school will eliminate its entire athletic program and several academic degrees to address a projected budget deficit of nearly $24 million for the 2025-26 school year. The news came as a shock to many, including former Sonoma State baseball player and current Los Angeles Dodger, Kyle Dickson.
Dickson credits his time at Sonoma State for helping him get drafted into the Major Leagues and expressed frustration over the sudden end of athletic programs on campus. Longtime Men's Soccer Coach, Zeimer, also shared his sadness over the loss of the program, highlighting the history and achievements of the team, including a national championship. The cuts have also impacted academic programs, leaving some students in limbo. Senior Jennifer Wiley, who recently applied to the now-eliminated English Master's program, expressed her fury over the last-minute decision, particularly the lack of prior notification to students who had already submitted applications and fees. Sonoma State President Emily Cutrer stated that closing the budget gap was a difficult decision, but she has yet to personally comment on the situation. The Chancellor of the California State University (CSU) system, Mildred Garcia, expressed support for Sonoma State's choice to cut programs, emphasizing that each CSU university faces unique budget challenges and makes decisions based on their specific needs. Meanwhile, Dickson vowed to work with other alumni and even the governor to find solutions and save athletics at Sonoma State, promising current student athletes that he will find a way to ensure their opportunities remain intact
