Seattle Sonics legend Gary Payton sits down for an interview with KOMO News Sports Director Niko Tamurian in May 2024. It's wild to think that for a generation of Seattle kids, they've spent their entire lives, or close to it, without the NBA in town.
Collective bargaining was handled in 2023; the TV deal appears to be progressing at a rapid pace and likely competed within weeks."I feel good about it," Payton said last week at KOMO Plaza. "We have to let the NBA do its process. The owners and governors, they have to do what they have to do. I think most of them have agreed they need to have two expansion teams. I think the two will probably be Vegas and Seattle. We have to wait for the TV deal, all that stuff to fall in place.
As Payton notes, and as countless Kraken fans can attest, Seattle now has a state-of-the-art arena that is absolutely NBA ready.facility was built to prepare for the NBA in 2022. The excitement has been building, and given the NBA timeline, which it has strictly adhered to, it appears the opportunity is the closest its been since the Sonics left.If and when that occurs, Payton has a statement:
