Vogue catches up with Heartstopper’s Will Gao and sister Olivia Hardy about Wasia Project.
Wasia Project have a habit of finishing each other’s sentences. That may have something to do with the breakout band being formed by two siblings – William G Hardy, otherwise known as actor Will Gao , and Olivia, his 19-year-old sister – who have played classical piano and violin since they were kids. “I think we’ve always made music together…” says Will, before Olivia takes over: “Mostly little performances for guests, just for fun.
” Even if the moody, piano-led ballads they first began making on GarageBand and releasing on SoundCloud were shaped by their DIY spirit, what’s always defined Wasia Project is that sense of fun. For Olivia, the urge to build her own sonic world came from seeing live concerts for the first time – including a formative Billie Eilish show at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2019 – while for Will, “It came as an epiphany.
