When the devastating fires erupted in Los Angeles, Fire Captain Shane Lawlor immediately responded, racing to the Palisades. For days, he tirelessly fought the flames, working 20-hour shifts without breaks for food or sleep. Still battling the blaze, Lawlor has been sleeping on-site or at his Santa Monica fire station whenever he's not on the fireline.
Meanwhile, back at his home in Carlsbad, California, Shane's 11-year-old son, Cian, a budding journalist at Magnolia Elementary School, was gearing up for a unique interview. Cian, gifted with a new podcasting kit for Christmas, was contacted by NPR to interview his father over Zoom. This marked Shane's first rest day since the fires began, and the first time father and son had connected in a week. The interview took place with Shane stationed at the Santa Monica Fire Department Station 2 and Cian at their family home.
