Netflix's Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, The Duffer Brothers
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen creator and showrunner Haley Z. Boston addresses whether the Netflix show will be getting a second season. The horror series follows engaged couple Rachel Harkin and Nicky Cunningham as something horrific happens in the week leading up to their wedding.
Stranger Things creators Ross and Matt Duffer are executive producers on the show, whose cast also features Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ted Levine, Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Gus Birney, and Sawyer Fraser. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Boston was asked if she envisions continuing the story for Rachel and Nicky or if the series could instead operate as an anthology series that shifts the focus to another couple. The showrunner explained that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen was designed to be a limited series, so Rachel and Nicky's story is complete, but she is open to the idea of a different narrative that has "got to be worse" for the characters since "you got to elevate it every time." Check out Boston's additional comments below: It was conceived of as a limited series, so it is kind of a full story, but I think there's a world where it's a totally different, very bad thing. I'd have to find another existential fear to explore. Netflix is home to some of the best-received anthology series of the 21st century, which sets a precedent for Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen to continue in this format if Boston and the streamer choose to do so. The lineup of Netflix original anthology series includes Black Mirror, Beef, and Love, Death & Robots. Nearly every episode of Black Mirror and Love, Death & Robots focus on a different story and different characters. Beef is more similar to the potential format that Boston's series could take on, with each season telling its own story with a new set of characters as opposed to each episode doing this. While it is not a Netflix original, American Horror Story is another series that has showcased the potential of anthologized storytelling for the genre. Over the course of twelve seasons, each of which has focused on a different story, it has run the fall gamut of horror, from witch covens to haunted hotels, all while retaining many of the same themes and cast members. Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen could follow this template, possibly even bringing back Morrone, DiMarco, and other actors to play new characters in future seasons. Another factor that could help get another season is having the Duffer brothers as executive producers. Even though Stranger Things has ended, the Duffers are producers on three new Netflix shows in 2026, between Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, the animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from '85, and The Boroughs. They are also working on a live-action Stranger Things spinoff. The original show becoming one of the most successful in Netflix history gives the other series that they are attached to a better chance for their potential futures.
