Veteran educator has been known to BUG students, and that's a good thing
“When I’m in the community, a child will often come up and ask me, ‘Are you the BUG lady?’,” said Vista resident Carol Herrera. BUG stands for Bringing Up Grades. Herrera created BUG in 2002 and has ever since organized the program, which is sponsored by Vista Kiwanis Sunrise Club. “It is unique because it is an opportunity for all students, whether over or under-achievers, to be awarded for substantial improvement,” Herrera said. “BUG maintains standards and challenges students to meet them.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in education and reading. In 1975, Herrera left the convent and moved to Vista. She taught elementary school in Carlsbad until 1986 when she was appointed principal at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad, a position she held for 16 years before joining the Vista School Board. She is now retired. “I ran a pretty tight ship ,” Herrera said. “I had expectations for the children, teachers and me.” “This goes back to my training as a nun.
