Like most things right now, hosting a wedding or attending one is a fraught enterprise—there are no satisfying answers.

And so she crunched the COVID numbers: How many known cases were in the wedding location’s county? About as many as people invited to the wedding. How bad was the outbreak where she lives? About five times that. But could she self-quarantine before and afterward without her job being at risk? Yes. Would the hotel be clean and fairly secluded? Yes. And the price? Decent, the coronavirus special. How much did she trust her friend to attempt to keep everyone safe? A lot.
Her parents, though, did their own calculations and came to a different conclusion. “They live about 300 miles away from the wedding location and deemed it too much to stay in a hotel, travel down the coast, and expose themselves to that many people at once,” Reed said. “My dad is also older and has a few prominent health issues that put him in the high-risk category for the virus.
