Election Day is a student holiday for North Side, North East, Harlandale, Judson, East Central and Southwest independent school districts.
Seven area school districts won’t have classes on Tuesday to allow their campuses to serve as Election Day polling sites without risking student safety. Tuesday is a student holiday for North Side , North East , Harlandale , Judson , East Central and Southwest independent school districts.
It’s a district-wide holiday for students, teachers and staff at IDEA Public Schools’ San Antonio campuses. Bexar County’s 302 Election Day polling sites will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Registered voters can cast their ballot at any of these locations. READ MORE: What to know about voting in the Nov. 5 election in San Antonio Northside ISD, San Antonio’s largest district, first made Election Day a student holiday and staff workday for the 2020 general election, and did so again for the November 2022 midterm. “This decision was made to allow for easy access to any potential voting sites while causing minimal disruption or safety concerns to the school day,” district spokesperson Barry Perez told the San Antonio Express-News in 2022. Anxiety over school security, particularly after the deadly Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde in May 2022, has led many districts in Texas, and across the country, to cancel classes on election days, when large numbers of voters show up on campuses to cast their ballots. San Antonio ISD, whose facilities provide numerous polling sites, will keep its schools running normally this Election Day. Edgewood, South San Antonio, South Side, Alamo Heights, Medina Valley and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal independent school districts will also have classes as usual on Tuesday. Chris Quinn contributed to this story.
