Sound onStaff, volunteers and contractors have worked for years to prepare the Battleship Texas for its journey to a drydock in Galveston for repairs. The"Mighty-T" has struggled with maintenance and decay, and some said it couldn't be moved. In the photo, Alyssa Peart looks up to talk to her assistant Philip Hoffman as they repair the whistle on the ship.
After repairs and restoration, the ship will likely not return to its slip near the San Jacinto Monument. Its next port of call is unclear. Water is pumped out of the hull in 2019. At times, the ship has taken on as many as 2,000 gallons of water per minute. It currently leaks about 20 gallons per minute.
Volunteer Brent Clanton looks through a rusted engineering store room. “I’ve been coming out to the battleship since I was a little kid. I’m 67 now,” he said.
