Those folks who want to ban books, perhaps it’s not their convictions that drive them as much as the fear, deep in their hearts, that they are wrong and their children will figure it out.
In 2022, attempts to ban or restrict library materials in the United States reached an all-time high, according to the American Library Association, which tracks book bans and advocates against censorship.There is a saying that was old when I was young: “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” I taught myself to read while in kindergarten and never looked back.
Books gave me access to ages I never lived in, to places I could never go, introduced me to people I could never meet, ideas both new and old, took me to places that maybe never existed but should have. Reading gave me the knowledge to build the skills that supported me my entire life. Reading brought me new perspectives and gave me a lot of “Huh!” moments.
I’ve written about my mom before, how she changed the world around her with integrity, determination, hard work and compassion for anyone in need. Everyone needs a hero and my Mom was mine. I’m not the person she was, I lack her “gift of gab” for one thing, but she and her mother, my “Granny,” carved the rock that I eventually polished into the person I am, for better or worse.
