Some parents are looking for more representation and believe a new, smaller school district could help.Davis’ children attend Rosecrest Elementary and Evergreen Junior High, which are both part of the Granite School District .

Parents voice concerns after Granite School District considers closures on east side Earlier this year, the district announced plans to potentially close up to three elementary schools in Millcreek and Holladay. “You go to the meetings, and you listen, and it's really one solution — close the schools,” Davis said. “Then, you go, 'Who is deciding high schools are closed?'” That’s why Davis started a GoFundMe to help commission a feasibility study — the first step in evaluating the financial and tax impacts of forming a new district. “I think one of the things it would accomplish is it would get about a four-times increase in representation,” Davis said. Other parents, like Tracei Nelson, whose kids attend Olympus High in the same district, said she understands why parents are pushing for change.“Right now, what’s frustrating is that we as a community don’t have much say, and that, to me, is a shame,” Davis added.“Granite School District is aware of a small group of parents exploring a potential district split, prompted by our current boundary study involving east-side elementary schools. There is misinformation circulating that multiple school closures have already been decided. In reality, we are in the early stages of the study, and no decisions or recommendations have been made. We’re holding dozens of community meetings to gather feedback before any recommendations are shared later this year. Recordings, presentations, and a feedback form are available at: https://www.graniteschools.org/planning/2025-population-analysis-studies-amp-data/ Board members live in the communities they serve and welcome public input at board meetings and open houses. In a previous study in this area in 2022, the district held over 90 meetings in the duration of the study and remain committed to making sure all voices are heard in the course of this ongoing study. Our schools in the study area are among the top performing in the state. We are focused on maintaining that performance while keeping taxes low. A district split would not address declining birth rates and high housing costs in the areas that are creating the current challenges with declining student populations and necessitating the study. Current data does not support a split as beneficial for students, teachers, or the community, and the district will continue working with all stakeholders to find thoughtful solutions to these challenges."
