Mary Kay Cabot shares her memories of Jim Brown.

Former Browns guard John Wooten, one of five men still living from the 13 in that photo, told me Friday that he got a call from his close friend and mentor Brown, who said, “Call the guys. We have to help the Champ. Tell them to come to Cleveland on Saturday night.”“That was the power of Jim Brown,” Wooten said.

“Belichick is the only person that you would know who has been in my home with these guys. He has been in the hotel room in Cleveland with them; not only that, he’s been to the graduation; not only that, he got us our first contract in Rhode Island. And not only that, when he fined his players one year, he gave all the fine money to the foundation.”

All of the running backs who tried to fill the shoes of Brown here understood the enormous responsibility of living up to the standard he set. When you follow in the footsteps of the greatest of all time, you have no choice but to try to run through a wall each time out. “Jim called me and said ‘I want you to tell the guys I’m not coming back,’” Wooten said. “He was livid. But he and Art eventually got back together.”

When John Dorsey was GM of the Browns in 2018, he sent Brown college tape of Nick Chubb, and Brown enthusiastically endorsed him. Conversely, Chubb always wanted to be around Brown, absorbing his wisdom about running the ball and social justice. Former Browns running back Kareem Hunt, a Cleveland native and student of the game, idolized Brown and was honored to wear the same orange and brown.
