'Some Nightmares Are Real:' Keeping Alabama spooky for young readers

AL.com's Kelly Kazek pays tribute to Kathryn Tucker Windham with first book for young adults.

"Some Nightmares Are Real," which explores the spooky side of Alabama folklore, is the first young adult book from Kelly Kazek.In “Some Nightmares are Real: The Haunting Truth Behind Alabama’s Supernatural Tales,” that territory is the whole state that author Kelly Kazek calls home.

Kazek said that, like Windham, she wanted to make things entertaining for young readers. But like the reporter she is, she also wanted to give them some real-world context.“This book is an homage to Windham’s ‘13 Ghosts and Jeffery’ series, with a twist,” Kazek said. “To tell the ghostly legends, I created fictional kids who come across the real places and lore in Alabama.
