Chief Dennis Otuaro is an activist and one of those who played prominent roles in the return of peace to the once troubled Niger Delta region in the peak of militancy in the oil-rich region. The environmental rights activist from Gbaramatu Kingdom in Delta State, tells THEOPHILUS ONOJEGHEN what the people of the region want from the Federal Government and how enduring peace can be sustainedWell, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.

The Niger Delta agitation is a nationalistic agitation. People in the area want to be carried along by those doing business on their land. That is why people like Jaja of Opobo, and others resorted to self-help during imperialism, even before oil exploration because the people were not involved. What we are saying is akin to the case of a hungry child that knows what is being cooked in his home and asks for a little portion.

The coast should be developed. The maritime sector is what many nations in the world survive on. But it needs good policies. Nobody will like their resources to be feeding other people to their detriment. But if you give us a percentage, you will get a general cooperation. What is happening in Zamfara is an issue of pretence and denial. Somebody has gold, and you want government to take the gold and then give the person 13 per cent share? Nobody will accept that again.

In Tunisia, a young boy whose trolley was damaged, burnt himself and said he was ready to die. Just recently, we saw the case of a young woman in Sudan. We have youths that don’t care about the situation. We have youths that are too fearful. We fear a lot.
