Dallas Oak Cliff v Houston Washington in boys 4A final on Saturday, March11,2023 at the Alamodome.SAN ANTONIO — There were only sad, tearful faces as the Washington Eagles stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the court at the Alamodome accepting their silver medals following the state championship game.
Grayson raised it high, and the blue-and-gold clad crowd that was still standing and cheering well after Saturday’s contest was no longer in doubt, gave the Eagles one final raucous roar. This group of Eagles did indeed soar, advancing the UIL state tournament for the first time. Prior to this year, Washington had not advanced to the state final four since 1959, when it competed in the Prairie View Interscholastic League, before schools were integrated.
Chris McDermott played well for Washington, staying on the floor for every second of the game until he fouled out with 1:42 to play. He led Washington with 18 points Saturday, and tallied 40 points and 22 rebounds in the two games at state. “We felt like they couldn’t make enough twos to beat us,” Faith Family Academy coach Brandon Thomas said.
