Solomon: Texans shouldn't wait past Thursday to get a quarterback
United States Latest News, United States Headlines

There's no sense waiting on an NFL draft beyond this one. And no available player at any...

Defense has been the calling card of new Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, left, but GM Nick Caserio might never be in better position to land a franchise quarterback than he will be Thursday, when Houston picks second and 12th overall in the NFL draft.

On page one of my never-to-be-a-bestseller “The Guide To Winning Football,” I will share the most important secret I have learned from playing, coaching, and writing about the sport.OK, I never played or coached, but that’s beside the point. The Texans are in desperate need of a quarterback. If the team leaves this weekend’s NFL draft without taking a player it believes is its QB of the future, this draft will be deemed a failure. Of course, that grade could change down the road after we see the performances from whomever they select, but the immediate analysis will be the Texans do not know what they are doing. That wouldn’t be anything new — duh? — but new head coach DeMeco Ryans has brought a breath of fresh air to an organization that had choked the life out of its faithful. This week, many are back to holding said breaths, waiting on what the Texans will do with the No. 2 overall pick Thursday. This isn’t a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Texans. This is the fourth time in franchise history they have had the No. 1 or No. 2 pick. The Texans had the No. 1 pick three times in their first 13 seasons. There was a different head coach for each pick. With the second pick and the 12th, this is Ryans’ best chance to get a franchise quarterback. The next time the Texans have a draft pick this high, Ryans will no longer be the coach. Unless that happens a couple years after he leads the Texans to a Super Bowl. Yo, Meco, I know you love defense, but every day your team doesn’t have a top QB is a day your team isn’t a contender. The wait 'til next year crowd acts as if they know where the Texans will be drafting in 2024, which quarterbacks are going to be available, and which ones, if any, will be stars. This isn’t complicated. No matter how much you hear about quarterback busts, Super Bowl winners are almost always led by great quarterbacks. If there were a Reggie White or a J.J. Watt available — which there isn’t — taking him while not securing a quarterback wouldn’t be a terrible decision, but it would still be the wrong one. White, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, played 13 seasons before he was on a Super Bowl team. Four QBs who came out the same year as he did played in Super Bowls before him. Watt, who just retired, played 12 seasons and was named the NFL's best defender three times, but he never even played in a conference championship game. Two quarterbacks in his draft class led their teams to the Super Bowl.Should they be as good as advertised, Bryce Young of Alabama and C.J. Stroud of Ohio State bring value that a defensive player simply can’t. That is why the Jets drafted a quarterback at No. 2 overall just two years ago yet Monday traded valuable assets to land Aaron Rodgers. And why the Carolina Panthers traded a host of picks to jump ahead of the Texans. There are many ways for this to play out. The Texans could get lucky and land the guy they want if the Panthers don’t take him.
