The race for something more meaningful than self-respect is pretty much over, but that...

Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith, watching the scoreboard against the Eagles, vows his team will work until the last play to get better. On some level it is a fun aspect of the NFL season that even when all hope seems to be lost for a particular team, there are still meaningful games to be played.

Whereas contenders are striving for the playoffs, the Texans enter Sunday’s game at the New York Giants struggling just to get a win. Smith is looking for what might work with the current roster because the Texans want to win games. They don’t want to tank to earn the No. 1 overall pick because that’s a loser’s mentality and hardly respectful of the players who sacrifice so much to play the sport.

The porous record is not Mills’ fault, of course — we’re talking about a team that ranks 30th in offense and defense — but he doesn’t have the skillset to overcome so many other deficiencies. But while the Texans have been mired in mediocrity or worse for now three seasons running, fortunes can turn quickly in the NFL.

Oh, the Giants are not nearly as good as their record says they are, but they are better than the Texans, who are every bit as bad as their record indicates. We might look back at this a few years from now as a fluke, but New York’s rookie head coach is off to a great start.
