After a brief retirement, longtime Houston-area coach hits a milestone but with a more...
Ronnie Courtney won a state title at Bush to go along with a pair at Willowridge before briefly retiring.Point taken, but Courtney has always coached on a high level. He has won with all styles of play, stompin’ or not.
However his teams played, they have always been hard-nosed and driven, like their head coach, whether he had a roster of future NBA players, college stars or those who never played beyond high school.Courtney has taken full advantage of said blessing to win three state championships and rank among the great coaches in Houston high school basketball history, a status he never envisioned when he took an assistant coaching position at Furr High School under Freddie Maura.
Courtney’s Willowridge teams took home back-to-back state championships in 2000-01. After TSU, he returned to the high school game and claimed another title with Fort Bend Bush in 2010. “They had to tell me when I got to 500, and they had to tell me when I got to 600, because I don’t really keep up with it like that until somebody brings it to my attention,” Courtney said.
