Emily Applegate, the first woman to go public with accusations of sexual harassment...

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson speaks during a news conference prior to a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus on Aug. 18, 2022, in Berea, Ohio. There are many layers to the NFL’s final resolution of the Deshaun Watson case.

Robinson said Watson’s actions were egregious and predatory, but her punishment level was based on precedent set by how the NFL has previously handled cases. As much as the league touts its off-the-field work on social problems such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and racial and gender equality, it has repeatedly failed to demonstrate a commitment to addressing said issues.

“The NFL and in particular Roger Goodell has proven time and time again that he cannot handle situations in the NFL that make him look like the bad guy to people that are putting the NFL where it is,” Applegate said. “Deshaun Watson is a very big name in the NFL. The NFL is not going to punish him the way that they should because they need Deshaun Watson’s name and likeness to continue to be in the NFL and to continue to generate revenue for them.

“I was specifically told to wear tight dresses when we had client dinners,” she said. “The reason for that was the clients need something to look at. And I was not allowed to wear flat shoes because my body looks better in high heels, and that’s what he liked to look at.”
