Kaitlin doesn’t even like cake, but she knew her 10th birthday was important. It was her first double-digit one. A graduate student at Houston Baptist, Kaitlin Smith is one of the top track athletes in the country. She is an All-American in the heptathlon, the seven-event competition that requires strength, speed and endurance.She is strong. She is fast. She has endured.
When she and her mom were evicted, “Can I sleep on your coach this weekend?” turned into couch surfing and eventually a 2½-year stay with a high school classmate.“There were definitely times she needed to step up and didn’t,” Smith said. “I would say that’s probably where my self-motivation came from.
“It’s not like I had something and it was taken away from me. It was never good. There were very few times I was genuinely happy at home, so I tried to do whatever I could to be outside of the house.”“I was grateful when my coaches would stay for an extra hour so I could keep practicing, and not have to go home,” she said.
