The two used to spend opening day together every year, but never at the stadium. They watched games at home or went to a bar or restaurant.“We didn’t have a lot of money growing up, but when I got older, this was always something I wanted to do and I’m blessed to be able to do it with my kid,” Alicea said. “Since my father passed, we have taken in baseball activities and experiences that I know he would have enjoyed.
Alicea wasn’t sure he would ever experience the joy of being at opening day for a championship Astros team. After growing up in Cleveland, he moved to Houston when he was 11, just as the Astros started a decade-long stretch without making the playoffs.“When I was in high school, I remember they did book club events, where if you read a certain number of books, you would get Astros tickets,” Alicea said.
