It was Feb. 26, 2001, when Devaughn Darling collapsed and died after a workout at Florida State. The recent collapse of Buffalo's Damar Hamlin brings back memories to family but solace in improved awareness and equipment.

“Of course, it hits more than close to home, because that’s my identical twin brother that I lost in the physical realm, because I believe he is here with me all the time.”Devard and Devaughn were born in the Bahamas and moved to Houston at 12. They got into football here and starred at Fort Bend Austin. Devaughn was a stud linebacker and Devard a top wide receiver.
Darling established the As One Foundation to help educate athletes, coaches, trainers, and others about the “dangers of dehydration, sickle cell trait and intense physical activity.” He is a spokesperson for Operation Hydration, which furthers the cause. Devard’s three boys, Devaughn II, who is 13, 15-year-old Devard Jr. and eight-year-old Devan, all have the sickle cell trait.
