A solar storm is expected to create colorful auroras visible in parts of North America Monday and Tuesday nights. The best chance of seeing the light show will be in the early morning hours of Tuesday. NOAA space weather forecaster Shawn Dahl recommends waiting for clear skies to get dark and going outside, ideally away from city lights. Taking a picture with a smartphone camera may also reveal hints of the aurora.
The sun is currently at the maximum phase of its 11-year cycle, leading to more frequent solar surges and northern lights. This active period is expected to last for at least another year. NOAA is monitoring the solar storms for potential disruptions to high-frequency radio communications
