A technical glitch resulted in a widespread misfire of an emergency evacuation alert in Southern California, causing widespread confusion and concern.
A software error caused an incorrect emergency evacuation alert to be sent to millions of mobile devices across Southern California. The initial alert was issued around 4 p.m. Thursday, shortly after the Kenneth Fire started in the West Hills area.
The evacuation warning was intended for people near the fire, but it was mistakenly sent to cell phones throughout most of the county, reaching residents in areas like the South Bay, Westside, downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and even Orange County. Speaking at a Saturday morning news conference, Office of Emergency Management Director Kevin McGowan said the initial alert was correctly targeted, but a software issue accidentally broadcasted it countywide instead of to the intended recipients. A correction message was sent out about 15 minutes later, and law enforcement and government agencies across the region issued statements assuring the public that the alert was in error
