Real County Sheriff Nathan Johnson said he recognized the severity of the storm as it moved in and began warning residents. “We started letting our folks know through our app and other means to take cover. The storm had it made a track kind of right through the county,” Johnson said. The sheriff’s office was hit directly. Johnson said four deputies’ units were damaged, calling the impact intimidating. He said hailstorms are not unusual in the area, but this one was different, particularly in populated parts of the city. “Some of it was this jagged almost like the size of your palm,” Johnson said. He described damage to homes and the danger posed by the hail. “Some of the houses had stuff coming right through the house, just sliced inyou really don't know, you know. Is this going to come clear through the windshield?” he said. Johnson said Real County deputies have been moved into reserve units as they continue helping residents recover.
