Desert Mountain captured their first state title in softball when they defeated Willow Canyon 4-2
That's what No. 2 Desert Mountain achieved on Monday night at Farrington Softball Stadium, knocking off two-time defending 5A champions No. 1 Willow Canyon 4-2 to grab the 5A title. With the win, the Wolves won their first state championship in softball.
Willow Canyon struck first, getting consecutive hits off of Goodwin in the bottom of the first to put runners at second and third. One run would be cashed in as junior utility infielder Rylee Turlington hit a sac fly into deep center field to advance both runners and give the Wildcats the early lead 1-0.
The score would remain the same until the top of the seventh, when Desert Mountain would add on two insurance runs to extend their lead to three runs. First, senior catcher Katie Hofmann looped a single into left field, then Goodwin shot an RBI double into left field followed by a sacrifice bunt from junior outfielder Emily Mcaleer that pressured Willow Canyon into a quick throw to first base which they couldn't execute, letting Goodwin score the second run of the inning.
Both pitchers pitched complete games, with McCann striking out 15 batters, but it wasn't enough for Willow Canyon in the end. The win meant everything to Desert Mountain, especially to the eight seniors that have stuck around for four years and built the foundation to a now great softball program that has a state title in their hands.
