Sofia Richie Grainge shares her journey with postpartum hair changes and reveals her secret to maintaining healthy and strong locks during this transformative period.
When Sofia Richie Grainge was asked if she was nervous about hair changes after giving birth, her answer was a definite yes. 'I have so many close girlfriends of mine who I've watched go through it postpartum,' she tells me over Zoom. 'When I found out I was pregnant, I started experiencing some hair shedding, so I kind of thought that I was going to be doomed. But, it turns out that I was fine and that I was anxious for no reason, but, I was of the possibilities.
' While the star fortunately didn't have to worry, she decided to take a proactive approach to keeping her hair healthy and strong. Immediately after giving birth, she started taking Nutrafol’s Postpartum supplement, after hearing how useful it was to a friend of hers who had just given birth. 'I have worked so hard on my hair for so many years to get it to the place where it’s at that I just wanted to get ahead of it.' Fluctuations in hair texture and density are common for most women as they transition through stages of pregnancy. Estrogen levels in the body increase during the pre-natal period, which can actually improve the look of hair. 'Estrogen binds to little estrogen receptors at the base of follicles, and it holds the hair for a longer period of time in the growth phase,' New York City–based hair-restoration surgeon Dr. Carlos Wesley previously said. 'The caliber of your hair is higher as well, and if you increase the caliber of every hair on your head, you increase the overall volume by about 38%.' However, following birth, estrogen levels decline and the stress hormone cortisol levels rise at rapid rates, resulting in shedding. This condition is called telogen effluvium, and reportedly affects upwards of 50% of new moms. This is where Nutrafol Postpartum comes in. 'It works by replenishing essential nutrients, balancing stress hormones, and supporting overall recovery, creating the best possible environment for healthy hair growth,' Dr. Isabelle Raymond, head of clinical & medical affairs at Nutrafol explains over email. 'This supplement helps by restoring key vitamins and minerals, supporting hormone balance, and reducing stress-related shedding—all critical factors in maintaining hair health.' Raymond adds that the formula draws on bio-optimized collagen for thickening hair; DHA omega-3s to address physical stress, and Shatavari—an adaptogen for balancing the body and growth cycle—and theanine, to promote relaxation. Vitamins and antioxidants round out the formula, to replenish key nutrients. To get these benefits, the brand recommends taking four capsules per day. 'It’s super-easy, and I have it laid out on my counter, organized into days in a pill container,' says Grainge, who takes two capsules in the morning and two at night. Since taking it—and maintaining consistent trims—Grainge tells me she’s noticed improved luster in her hair. 'It’s growing really fast, it feels really healthy so I’m just gonna take it for as long as I can,' she says with a laugh. Eight months after giving birth, she’s still keeping up with the capsules; Nutrafol advises taking this through their first year postpartum. 'Once you’ve stopped breastfeeding, you can switch to Nutrafol Women or our vegan formula depending on your needs,' Raymond instructs. Grainge admits that her pregnancy and postpartum experience has been a bit of a wakeup call in how she cares for her hair. 'I can usually be pretty rough with my hair,' she says. 'I like to pull it, slick it back, and know that it will stay intact; but, at the beginning of my pregnancy I realized I cannot be that rough.' These days, while her hair is admittedly thriving, she finds herself opting for center part, low buns (instead of her calling-card high slick-back style), limiting heat and bleach, and prioritizing nourishing products—like coconut oil masks and overnight treatments. For any fellow new moms, Grainge’s biggest advice is to give yourself some grace. 'I wish I told myself that sooner because, man, can we be tough on ourselves. Having a baby is no joke, it’s a lot.'
