A bill under consideration by Congress would require the Social Security Administration to send annual statements via regular mail. While that information is available online, not enough people are accessing it, advocates say, and that can hurt their retirement.
A bill under consideration by the House of Representatives would require the Social Security Administration to mail annual statements to workers.
The bill, called the Beneficiary Education Tools, Telehealth, and Extenders Reauthorization Act of 2019, or BETTER Act, includes a provision that would reinstate mailed Social Security statements. Workers of all ages who pay into the system can view their statements online by setting up an account at the My Social Security website.
Advocates for the provision argue that many people are not accessing their online statements. A report from the Social Security Office of the Inspector General released in February found that 43% of registered users accessed their online statements in 2018, down from 48% in 2017 and 53% in 2016.
