Some Social Security payments are set to increase after the Social Security Administration updated its rules around the Supplemental Security Income requirements.The SSA announced it would be changing its definition of a public assistance household earlier this month, and the new definition expands coverage for many more Americans eligible for the payments.

As SSI serves low-income Americans who have a disability or are 65 or older, millions depend on the benefits to go toward their monthly necessities. Typically, beneficiaries must bring in less than $1,971 monthly in income and have less than $2,000 in assets .In 2024, SSI checks were up to $943 for single Americans and $1,415 for couples.O'Malley said making the update to the policy will remove significant barriers that Americans currently face in accessing SSI.
