Social scientists: Anxiety invites misinformation | Opinion
We then showed all the participants — both the relaxed group and the anxious group — a series of six Facebook posts that were made to look like news articles about COVID-19 coming from either Fox News or MSNBC. Two of the posts contained false headlines, two contained accurate headlines, and two contained fact-checked headlines. For each of the posts, we asked participants if they believed the claim and whether they would be willing to share it with others.
Our findings therefore show how we all got some parts of the pandemic wrong when we were anxious and believed in and shared not only accurate information more but also misinformation. This is quite a different picture of Republicans’ allegedly high misinformation susceptibility than we see in studies that focus solely on false claims.
Our findings are an important reminder that misinformation and polarization problems are often more nuanced than we make them out to be. And, as we are going into the 2024 election with emotions running high, our work from the pandemic might be more relevant than you think. Even if we could convince people to worry about the same political issues we do , ratcheting up anxiety is a double-edged sword.
