Some grant recipients who receive their money through the Postbank are still in limbo, as their September payments are still outstanding.
Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the October grant payment cycle was going smoothly on Tuesday, with millions of pensioners receiving their money.Non-governmental organisations working with social grant recipients say that vulnerable South Africans who rely on social grants for a living are receiving their October payments, following last month's technical glitch at the Postbank that affected thousands of recipients across the country.
“We got an assurance from the Post Office and the Postbank that if there were glitches in terms of payment last month or in August, that should be sorted out. We have been given an assurance that the matter will be resolved,” he added.Civil society organisation Amandla.
Richardson said that the cash delays were not only negatively affecting grant recipients in KwaZulu-Natal, but had also been an ongoing problem for years in some parts of the country. “This is complicated because the master service agreement has not been signed and there seems to be issues with this. Sassa doesn't have a legal mandate because this agreement has not been signed to properly hold Postbank accountable.”
“On the hole, they seem to be working but I'm sure that there are issues, we just can't pinpoint exactly what they are and what they relate to,” she said.
