Her artery had shut down following complications from her 2020 ACL surgery.
CINCINNATI -A local soccer player has returned to the field two years after undergoing rare bypass surgery to repair a blocked artery behind her knee. Elise Haller’s popliteal artery had shut down following complications from her 2020 ACL surgery, causing years of excruciating leg pain that forced her away from soccer.
Dr. Chris Paprzycki, a vascular surgeon at The Christ Hospital in Mount Auburn, performed the bypass surgery to replace the blocked artery nearly three years after Haller’s initial ACL repair. “This is something that happened and normally at that age you’d see there is something congenital or traumatic, obviously she tore her ACL so that seems to be the most likely scenario,” Paprzycki said. “But there are some congenital disorders like popliteal artery entrapment and congenital aplasia that we can very rarely see, but I think it didn’t change the repair which is we had to replace the popliteal artery.” The pain had become Haller’s new normal after her ACL surgery. She experienced severe burning in her left calf that made walking across campus difficult. “When I would walk just across my college campus, my calf would burn, I would start limping,” Haller said. “If I was walking with people and they were walking fast I couldn’t keep up with them.” The symptoms forced Haller, who was being recruited by college teams, to limit her playing time and work constantly with athletic trainers. “I really wanted to play my senior year soccer season at my high school, and it was really difficult, and it really wasn’t the same as before my injuries,” Haller said. “I couldn’t play as much and I had to sit out sometimes and constantly having to work with the athletic trainer.” The Haller family visited several doctors looking for answers before finding Paprzycki. Although the cause of the artery shutting down remains unknown, Paprzycki said Haller’s determination stood out. “You know she had been suffering for so long that she was just anticipating to put up with it more, but you could really immediately get the sense for her drive and spirit,” Paprzycki said.“I think just running for the first time and yeah it was good, it was nice,” Haller said.Browns react to losing Quinshon Judkins for the remainder of the seasonOhio governor regrets signing sports betting bill, worries about integrity of games
