West Australian Premier Roger Cook has launched an extraordinary attack on Qantas, questioning whether it deserves the title of Australia’s ‘national carrier’.

Premier Roger Cook says Western Australian is heavily disadvantaged by a lack of competition in the aviation industry and questioned whether Qantas could truly be considered Australia’s national carrier because it overlooks key areas of the country.

“At the moment we are particularly disadvantaged by the lack of competition in our domestic aviation market, and the protections that Qantas enjoy as our so-called ‘national carrier’,” Mr Cook toldWest Australian Premier Roger Cook says Qantas needs to step up its investment in WA.

“My government has been clear that we want more routes connecting Perth, and the cultural and economic benefits those flights bring.”which includes spruiking the state’s international education and tourism sectors. He is expected to meet with Indonesian airline executives along with Perth Airport representatives on Tuesday.against the Commonwealth from the Queensland Labor government, which said on Sunday that more Qatar flights would lower airfares and boost tourism in Australia.

“I don’t think Qantas has really realised the potential of Perth as a western gateway,” Mr Cook said.“We kept them in the air by keeping our boundaries strong and by having our state open in terms of our mining industry and our intrastate tourism market, so we’d like to see Qantas invest more heavily in Western Australia.”
