Ash Regan, who was born Sarah Jane in 1974, said the change happened when she was a teenager.
An SNP leadership hopeful has said she changed her name as a teenager to avoid a mix up with a girl at school. Ash Regan’s birth certificate, seen by the Daily Record, shows she was born as 'Sarah Jane' in 1974.
Asked if she had changed her name to Ashten, she said: “I did, yes, when I was 15. There was another girl at my school that had exactly the same name as me, and we kept getting our exam results mixed up. "I did change it by deed poll. We had exactly the same name, the same school, and everything was just getting mixed up.
“I probably wouldn’t do it again now, looking back. It’s the kind of thing that a 15-year-old does. I probably wouldn’t have done it as an adult.” She joked: “No dark secrets.”Scottish politics She studied International Relations at Keele University, becoming the first person in her family to attend university, and later worked for the left-wing Common Weal think tank.To sign up to the Daily Record Politics newsletter, click here.
