A snowy owl was caught in the grille of a car in northeastern Minnesota before being rescued by Annabell Whelan on Monday, December 23, 2024. Whelan was out with her boyfriend's family in Duluth when she saw the owl after the collision. The car's owner had already called for help, but the animal rescue organization was closed. Whelan stepped in to help, as she had already rescued an injured great gray owl earlier that day.
Experts at Wildwoods, a Duluth-based wildlife rehabilitation center, advised her on how to safely catch the injured bird. Whelan wrapped the snowy owl in a blanket and kept her overnight in a crate in a dark, quiet room in her home. She named her Nowl, a play on noel
