Sunday's winter storm brought varying amounts of snowfall across the Philadelphia region, with some areas receiving over 6 inches while others saw only a few inches. The city of Philadelphia officially recorded 2.0 inches, its largest snowfall of the season. Meteorologists attribute the differences in snowfall to the slow transition from rain to snow and the occurrence of larger flakes Sunday night.
Amounts varied drastically, with 6-plus inches reported in parts of Chester and Montgomery Counties. Officially, 2.0 inches was recorded at PHL. Snow totals from Sunday's storm varied across the region, with radical differences in some places only a few miles apart, according to the spotter reports posted by the National Weather Service.
Generally, however, they ranged from 3 to 6 inches in the suburban counties to the north and west of the city, and 2 to 3 inches in Philadelphia and South Jersey. \For the record, officially the city had its biggest snow of the season — a whole 2.0 inches measured at Philadelphia International Airport, surpassing the 1.8 inches of January 6th. The seasonal total stands at 4.9 inches. The slow development of the changeover from rain to wintry mix to snow held down the city totals, said Alex Staarmann, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, and most of it accumulated in a few hours. The highest amount in the region, 6.6 inches, was reported in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, and 5.7 inches was measured in Norristown. Some of these totals may change as new reports come into the National Weather Service, but the airport total appears to be correct, Staarmann stated. Isolated fluff bombs of larger flakes Sunday night likely bumped up totals in some areas, Staarmann added. \Much of what has fallen likely will stick around, as temperatures may not get above 20 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday
