Unprecedented snowfall in the Florida Panhandle has led to road closures and travel disruptions. Heavy snow accumulation prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to shut down a 70-mile stretch of Interstate 10, forcing drivers to navigate hazardous conditions. Winter storm warnings are in effect across northern Florida, with predictions of up to 8 inches of snow in some areas.

It's snowing in Florida – yes, you read that right! Record-breaking accumulation was reported across the Florida Panhandle and prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to shut down some major roadways by early Tuesday evening. A nearly 70-mile stretch of Interstate 10 had been shut down from the Alabama-Florida state line just west of Pensacola to Walton County, due to heavy snowfall.

Florida Department of Transportation crews were out removing snow and ice along critical Panhandle roads, including Interstate 10. Live traffic cameras showed parts of Interstate 10 near Pensacola covered in snow as drivers continued their journeys. This rare snowfall comes as winter storm warnings are in effect for northern Florida, with wintry weather sweeping across the southeast. Freezing temperatures are expected, along with the potential for snow, ice, sleet, and freezing rain. The far western Florida Panhandle is where the highest snowfall totals are projected to fall. Some areas could see up to 8 inches of snow, which would cause serious travel issues. In the northern parts of the state, snow totals will be around 1 inch due to mixing. This happens because warmer air above the ground allows that snow to mix with and change over to freezing rain and sleet. For snow to fall without mixing, the entire atmosphere needs to stay below freezing (32°F).
