The blizzard pummeling much of California is creating zero-visibility driving conditions.

More than 70 miles of Interstate 80 shut down in Northern California due to harsh blizzard conditions, officials told SFGATE Monday — and it’s unclear when the major thoroughfare will fully reopen. Videos shared by the Placer County sheriff and Caltrans District 3 show that whiteout conditions closed the roadway from the Applegate area all the way to“It’s nasty out there,” Caltrans representative Gilbert Mohtes-Chan told SFGATE over the phone. The weather is so blustery, it’s difficult to read traffic signs or see the roadway, and some of the traffic cameras are completely frozen over, he added.
Blowing snow continues to pile up on I-80 in the Sierra as the route remains closed between Applegate & Stateline. Here's a live look at EB 80 near Boreal - notice the growing snow bank about the cover up the roadside sign on the right.
