The National Weather Service forecasts a chance of snow or wintry precipitation for parts of Alabama next Tuesday, January 21. Temperatures are expected to plummet after a cold front passes through the state over the weekend, creating a favorable setup for winter weather. Uncertainty remains about the exact track of the low pressure system and the type of precipitation that will fall.

It's true. Snow or some form of wintry precipitation will be possible in Alabama next Tuesday, January 21. Forecasters said uncertainty remains about who could get snow and who could get just a cold rain. Snow? Again? It’s starting to look more possible, according to Alabama forecasters. Speculation was again growing about the possibility of snow, or ice or sleet for parts of Alabama early next week — possibly Tuesday into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service expects a cold front to move through the state over the weekend. It could bring several inches of rain to Alabama, but no severe weather and no winter precipitation are expected. However, forecasters expect temperatures to fall like a rock after the front passes, with some of the coldest temperatures of the winter expected on Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures on Monday may not make it out of the 20s in north Alabama, and highs at the freezing mark will be possible well into central Alabama. South Alabama will have highs in the low 40s. Forecasters expect an area of low pressure to develop and track near the Gulf Coast, which is usually a favorable setup for some sort of winter precipitation for Alabama when there is cold air in place. The weather service said there was still a lot of uncertainty in computer model forecasts, through support for accumulating snowfall in Alabama has increased over the past few days. “Although the finer details will not be resolved until likely the weekend or early week, next Tuesday and Wednesday at the current moment appear to be primed for some sort of wintry mischief, either in the form of snow, ice, or a mix,” the weather service in Birmingham said in its Wednesday morning forecast discussion. The weather service in Huntsville also noted uncertainty in models but said forecasts ranged from widespread snow in north Alabama to the snow staying more to the south. However, forecasters have added low snow chances to the forecast for north Alabama, specifically parts of Cullman, Marshall and DeKalb counties, for next Tuesday. The weather service in Mobile was also monitoring trends and said a wintry mix could be possible for parts of south Alabama on Tuesday, though forecasters said when precipitation returns was hard to pin down as of Wednesday morning. The key will be the track of the Gulf low, which will determine who gets snow and who gets just a cold rain, the weather service said
