ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A messy Halloween is in store for treat-or-treaters in Anchorage, the Matanuska Valley and Kenai Peninsula, where snow, rain and a chance of freezing rain are expected.
A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 7 a.m. Halloween and lasts through early Friday. Snow totals could range from 2 to 5 inches with about a tenth of an inch of ice possible. The possibility of freezing rain comes from warm layers of air in the atmosphere. Melted snow doesn’t have the chance to re-freeze before reaching Earth. And if ground temperatures remain below freezing, the precipitation turns into ice. All this to stay, freezing rain can make walking and driving hazardous. Please take extra time and space to get where you’re going.
A High Wind Watch is in place for the Alaska Peninsula starting late Thursday night. Elevated winds out of the Southeast are likely to reach 40 to 55 mph with gusts to 75 mph possible.
