Chris Parnell reacts to Maya Rudolph's M&M's spokesperson hiring. 'She's a great actor, she's a great singer, she's really funny, and she's very personable, and she's very likeable. So, choosing her, I think was very wise on their part.'
Saturday Night Live alum Chris Parnell has shared his reaction to his former co-star Maya Rudolph becoming the new spokesperson for M&M's candy. Following the backlash to their character redesigns for their anthropomorphic female M&M's spokescandies, the company decided to retire all of their candy mascots across the board and bring on Rudolph as their new spokesperson.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Screen Rant had the opportunity to sit down for an exclusive interview with Parnell, who in addition to his stint on SNL also provides voices for Archer, American Dad!, Family Guy, and Rick & Morty among other roles. The actor, who voices the Progressive Box for the Progressive insurance company's commercials, has his own experience with being a spokesperson, though he assumes Rudolph will appear on camera instead of as a voice.
Well, I assume she's gonna be on camera, in person, as opposed to just being the voice of an animated box like I was, but Maya can do anything. Maya is an incredible impressionist, she's a great actor, she's a great singer, she's really funny, and she's very personable, and she's very likeable. So, choosing her, I think was very wise on their part.
Many prominent spokespeople, including the voice of the Aflac duck Gilbert Gottfried, have had stints on SNL, though Gottfried proved to be one of SNL's one season wonders during their troubled season 6. However, alumni with much longer tenures on the sketch series have also taken on gigs in the advertising space, especially in recent years.
This apparent pipeline between Saturday Night Live and advertising may be for one significant reason. The series has long been known for its commercial parodies, which promote iconic fake products including Mom Jeans and The Bass-o-Matic. While the premises of the fake ads might seem ridiculous, the actors' commitment to their roles essentially acts as a demo reel for potential advertisers.
