The annual Oakland hills event on Armed Forces Day was canceled for the last two years due to the pandemic.
They were veterans of U.S. Army Company E, Second Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the segregated Japanese American unit that was awarded more medals, man for man, than any other unit in American history. And they did it for a country that was holding their mothers, fathers and younger siblings behind barbed war in prison camps for the “crime” of having Japanese ancestry. It’s hard to think of greater patriotism than that.
That came to a sudden halt two years ago when the pandemic hit, making public gatherings like this unsafe. But I’m glad to report that the East Bay Regional Park District has given the green light to resume the service this year, and you are cordially invited. The main stop was Bruyères, a city in Alsace near the German border where some of their bloodiest battles were fought, including the famous rescue of the Lost Battalion, a Texas National Guard unit of about 200 men who were trapped behind enemy lines.
Fifty years later, I was on a bus with them as we entered Bruyères. As we pulled into town on the main street, which, of course, is named Rue de 442, I saw huge banners overhead, which I expected them to read, “Bienvenue à nos libérateurs” . But instead they read “Bienvenue à nos sauveurs” and with good reason.
