Members were each expected to wear a three-piece suit and a tie at meetings to set them apart from a rival breakfast club, The Chiselers, which died out a few years later . There were a few grumbles about the early starting hour, but Herbert Breed, who was the club’s president in 1940, retorted that “Any damn fool can go to bed at night, but it takes a man to get up that early in the morning!”

One year later, Children’s Fairyland opened its doors, and the club made Mott an honorary member for his role in making it happen. In 1954 Fairyland’s puppet theater had its grand opening, attended by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, who got his start in politics as Alameda County’s district attorney.

His Magic Key still works too. In 1982, the club made a big gift to the city, spearheading the restoration of the beautiful Necklace of Lights around the lake, and in 1987 came the biggest innovation of all, when the club finally started admitting women.
