Then-U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, shares a moment Sept. 22, 2001, with Alice Hoglan, the mother of Mark Bingham, during a memorial service for Bingham at UC Berkeley’s Wheeler Hall. Bingham, a Cal graduate and former athlete, died on United Airlines Flight 93 in the Sept. 11 attacks.Just days after the Sept.
“Senator,” I said, “I think it’s time for another mural,” meaning the passengers and crew of Flight 93.Then it was time to go upstairs for the service. I sat in the audience, and McCain sat with the other speakers onstage in front of a huge screen that was there for a slide show. After the speeches the lights were turned off, and everyone onstage twisted around in their chairs to watch the show.
I used to wonder why so many people who lived through World War II were nostalgic for that time, even though 405,399 Americans were killed. Then Sherman took Atlanta and began his march to the sea, cutting the Confederacy in half, and Lincoln was reelected easily. The South surrendered six months later.
