Keeping the stray feline population in check, Alameda organization ICRA’s annual jewelry, art and plant sale will be on May 6.
Five years ago Gail Churchill, a volunteer with Island Cat Resources and Adoptions in Alameda, was feeding a local colony of homeless cats when a new face appeared. It was a battered-looking big orange male tabby who was asking for food.
The kitty, who was named Bertie by Gail’s roommate because “he just looks like a Bertie,” had an infection raging through his body from the head wound and causing an enlarged heart. He was positive for feline immunodeficiency virus and had cancer in his jaw. “But last month I noticed Bertie was losing weight, and I knew we were getting close. One morning he started bleeding from his mouth, and it was time. I said goodbye to him while holding him peacefully at home, with the help of a vet who came to my house.”“He lived his best life with me, and I am happy to have had him in my life.
