The nonprofit can only stay in the new spot through August, so its biggest challenge now is finding a permanent home.
Of course, it never really went away, despite every challenge the pandemic could throw at it. After more than a year of being closed and two more years operating as a mobile museum, Habitot opened an indoor space Monday at 5689 Bay St. in Emeryville. The property’s owner, CenterCal Properties, is making it available to Habitot from June through August to enliven the north end of Emeryville’s Bay Street with more activities for families.
It might look like fun and games to you — and, no doubt, to the kids themselves — but child development experts tell us that play is how children learn best, and the years ) to 5 are the most important of all because of the brain’s rapid development. So Moreland and her staff scrambled to turn Habitot into a mobile museum and began presenting their most popular exhibits, art and maker programs at outdoor locations, including libraries, public parks, schools and other venues where families would feel comfortable. To date, 25 events in a dozen cities have popped up from Pittsburg to Livermore, Richmond to Fremont and cities in between. Even more are planned this year.
“We are fortunate that so many funders and individual families stuck with us through the pandemic years,” says Moreland. “The city of Berkeley gave us American Rescue Plan funds; we received additional assistance from the state and federal governments; and corporations and individuals have been generous, too.”
