But I did meet some of the people he led, and they were unanimous in their adoration for the man they all called Jocko.
There are so many great Jocko stories, like the time a young sailor swung open a door that the admiral was standing behind and knocked him flat on his keister. A lieutenant commander grabbed the kid and started screaming at him. The boy spent the next few days in abject terror, expecting to be arrested at any moment. But nothing happened. Jocko hadn’t even put him on report.
Jocko was one of a kind. He overcame prejudice to become the first Native American to graduate from Annapolis. Also, since many of his battles were fought at night, he slept on a cot on the bridge so he could spring into action at a moment’s notice. The quarantine trailer, where they were confined for the first few weeks for fear they’d bring moon germs back with them, is still there in the hangar bay. So is the radar room, where the ship tracked incoming enemy planes; along with the ready room, where the pilots got their final briefings before battle; the mess hall; the living quarters; the sick bay — all in perfect working order.
