The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) confirmed Monday morning that SNAP benefits are suspended because of the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps millions of Americans afford groceries. Each participant received, on average, $187.40 per month in 2024. These benefits are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture , but states administer the funds and manage the program.

Alabama DHR said it received guidance from the USDA on Oct. 24 that read in-part, “ is suspending all November 2025 benefit allotments until…federal funding is provided, or until FNS directs State agencies otherwise.” Alabama DHR said current recipients must continue to recertify their benefits despite the pause in funding, and “report as they normally would, and submit all documentation that would normally be required for them to continue in the program.” These steps are critical to allow recipients to receive benefits more quickly once the suspension is lifted, according to Alabama DHR. People can still apply for benefits and DHR will continue to review those applications, however, benefits will not be paid until there is congressional action to end the shutdown.DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner said, “Alabama DHR, along with many others, hopes Congress will come to a quick resolution on the federal government shutdown.”Trump administration posts notice that no federal food aid will go out Nov. 1Man accused of fatal train stabbing of Ukrainian refugee indicted on federal chargesUnfiltered Access: Teens are bypassing age restrictions on buying e-cigarettes Clear the Crib challenge involves high school sports teams, mascots to spread message about babies sleeping safely
