This is one of the largest cemeteries of shaft tombs found in the region, according to the archaeologists who conducted the studies. Findings from the region are expected to provide information about the turbulent times between the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. when Persian forces began invading the region and many historical changes were taking place in Egypt.The researchers found a medium-sized tomb of a man called Djehutyemhat, who appears to have been a royal scribe.
The southern and western walls have bearings of offerings, a ritual during those times. The northern wall has a long sequence of spells, which are meant to protect the occupier from snake bites. In those days, venomous snakes were common, but in addition to being deadly, they were also considered protectors of the deceased.
